Bookbinding for Book Artists presents a simple approach to binding books in cloth and leather without advanced bookbinding skill. Household tools are substituted for traditional binding equipment without diminishing the quality or functionality of hard covered books.

Three bindings are described:

Pamphlet binding with boards is a substantial binding for books with only 4 to 32 pages. The hard covers can be covered in quarter, half or full cloth. It is described with end sheets as paste-downs as well as with exposed cloth hinges on the inside of the boards.

Flat Back binding is ideal for medium size projects. The book block is sewn onto tapes, accommodating 24 to 100 pages. It is the most commonly used binding for hard cover artists books.

The Tight Back and Hollow Back variation are described as rounded and backed leather bound books. The arch of the spine structurally allows the book to be bound with hundreds of pages. Yet, this elegant binding can have as few as 32 pages.

Bookbinding for Book Artists has over 400 detailed drawn illustrations to support the instructional text. They are the most elaborate illustrations in Smith’s books-on-books series. The book also contains 60 photo reproductions of books by 19 contemporary binders and book artists.
